Dancehall fans islandwide are lashing out at the security forces for raiding and breaking up several entertainment events and are of the opinion that this action will only lead to more aggression in the society, and an increase in criminal activity.
 The dancehall fans say that while they are concerned about the alarming murders and criminal activities taking place in the country, the security forces are contributing to its growth by taking away their enjoyment. “Some of us lives are spared at times because we gone out of the area to a little dance or stage show and we don’t come home until daylight when it is much safer. A some entertainment we deh most of the time when we hear sey wi family or friend dem get kill off,” said Tamara of a Waterhouse address. Tamara went on to tell XtraNews that the security forces can deal with things in a more professional way. “I agree that yuh have some man who a come a di event dem wid dem tings. If the police start to do stakeout and wait till di dance a done fi do dem search, people wouldn’t vex wid dem so much. It hot when you jus pay yuh money, go in a dance or stage show and police come done it,” she said. Keith, another partygoer, is of the view that these entertainment events keep certain youths out of trouble. “When a man have a dance or stage show fi go and enjoy himself, him nuh have time fi inna no wrongs,” he said. “If under him juice and the music whole him while him deh deh a party whole night. When it done, him so tired him gone home gone sleep. Entertainment keep dem out a trouble.” A prominent promoter who wished to remain anonymous told XtraNews that, “if members of the security forces are being intelligence driven, they would not have to resort to mashing up the people’s main means of enjoyment. They are not using their common sense as they would have made more apprehension and seized more weapons. “They say they have intelligence that wanted men or men with guns are in a dance or at a certain stage show. What they do is go to the venue and start to abuse and humiliate both patrons and organizers of the event. Their common sense doesn’t tell them that if they cordon off the venue and wait on the patrons to come out, they would be more successful.” He added that, “As soon a people hear that police and soldier outside a the venue, them a go bum rush di gate or door to get out and that only lead to chaos.” A member of the security forces, who went on a recent operation in Clarendon, told XtraNews that they went to that particular event in search of a ‘top man’ they allege was involved in the death of police officers. “We have knowledge that some entertainers and persons in entertainment have strong links to criminal elements. As a matter of fact, some of the entertainers are criminals themselves who have criminal history records. While we support their change of lifestyle, we cannot condone them holding the mike in one hand and the gun in the other, so we will be relentlessly going after them whether in the dance or at their place of abode,” the officer said.
