Dancers 'bring it' on E-mail
Wednesday, 23 April 2008

Anthony Minott, Star Writer

Guest artiste Vegas sings one of his latest tunes as his dancers get wild in the background during the Star-sponsored Dancin' Dynamites Show inside the TVJ Studios, Lynhurst Road, St Andrew, last Sunday.

Seven sets of dancers tried to impress judges and the audience with varied presentatioins at the staging of the STAR-sponsored Dancin' Dynamites Show at the TVJ Studios, Lyndhurst Road, Sunday.

The dancers had to 'bring it' to compositions inspired by Indian, Chinese, hip-hop, dancehall and disco influences.

So diverse was the show that it needed three guest judges to deliberate. They were Gopa Ramani, dance director and founder of ANJALI School of Indian Dance; Wilson Loo Kin, president of the Chinese Benevolent Association, and for dancehall, disco and hip-hop, Michelle Patterson, of the Excelsior Community College, School of Performing Arts.

H.J. Dancers, clad in neon outfits blazed the stage to a disco beat and the judges loved it. They scored a perfect 30, the highest for the night.

Guest judge Michelle Patterson said: Òunu bring it!" Neila stated that their comedy and technique was good, and Orville dramatically 'loaded' his finger pistol and fired, signalling the third 10 for H.J. Squad.

Dynamic performance

G-Squad, which gained the second highest mark from the judges, 27, transformed the vibe of the show with their high energy movements.

"You had a dynamic performance, you made use of the space," Michelle commented.

G-Squad actually had the highest public votes for the second week in-a-row.

Third on the judges scorecard was Mad Links with 26 points, getting the job done with an Indian dance. Being the first performers for the night, they were under pressure to deliver a good opening and this they did.

Gopa, applauded their effort. "I like their expressions (and) the choreography."

Neila and Orville also agreed with the guest judge, stating they showed some effort however they thought the duo should have been putting more energetic.

The other four dancers struggled in the judges' books. The duo Venom Squad, scored 22 points, for fourth place in the judgesÕ standings. Fifth place went to Mad Squad, the duo with the lowest number of public votes this week. The judges gave them a combined score of 21 points. The judges' consensus was that their moves weren't sharp enough for disco.

Unimpressionable

Hypa Active Clique and Untouchable Squad were tied for sixth and last in the competition on 20 points apiece, both duos did hip-hop and failed to impress the judges.

Guest dance group Umogah were electrifying in a West Africa-influenced dance entitled 'Seanasianick'.

Host, Jenny Jenny then called Tanya Serrano and Keith Cousins, both gym and dance instructors to perform. They treated the audience to a romantic Latin composition.

Unlimited Squad were sent packing for having the least number of votes. Next week the field will be cut to six, so dancers need to 'bring it'.
